No need to manually switch over, the batteries kick in within milliseconds and will automatically recharge when the power comes back on.
This is to protect the batteries. Batteries have a cycle life (how many times you can charge and discharge them) if you completely drain a battery you can destroy the cycle life in as little as 2 or 3 cycles so we limit the amount of discharge allowed to prolong battery life.
Best would be to get a qualified electrician to do it, as with any mayor electrical work done you will have to get a Certificate of Compliancy. This shouldn’t take a qualified electrician longer than an hour or so.
